She is basically following the same path her father walked when he was her age. One day as she is walking, she finds a gold key. She picks it up and discovers it gives her mystical powers.She meets a little rabbit and discovers he can talk, but, talks in rhymes. She clashes with Sanny, a giant centipede that is the leader of the bullies of the forest. For decades the residents of Everafter have been trapped in their little community by the actions of the bullies. When Piper discovers the power of the key, she vows to break the spell that has been cast on the inhabitants of Everafter, and seeks the assistance of the her friends.
