Degen, College Board consultant, begins with four principles to help students become better writers: set forth clear expectations for written work; make directions consistent for each paper all year; build in ample time to do revisions; and model the writing process in class. His first three chapters ("Developing Writing Skills"; "Expository Paragraph" and "Constructing a Paper") contain pointed lessons, annotated student writing samples and assignments for practice.
