Aprašymas

Nobody knows how long the little fishing village of Windflower Hale has existed on the peninsula between the black rock outcroppings and the yellow sand shore surrounding it. On the edge of the rocky shoreline stands a tall lighthouse.

Benny Berman is the Lighthouse Keeper, a job inherited from his father, who inherited it from his forefathers. Benny is a curmudgeon, just as his father and the generations behind him were. They were born old and cranky with hidden, wordless hearts of gold. They believed that this condition was necessary to Light house Keeping.

The little village believed this too, and left the Berman's to their ways because Benny Berman saved lives during storms, and kept the fishermen as safe as possible.

There are few smiles in the solemn, gray little fishing village. Just duties to be followed by Benny Berman, Lighthouse Keeper, and the fishing people in the village.

Spinster Rosie Cantor, a calm quiet healer of the village ills, grows flowers in her yard. They bloom year round, and Rosie carries them to the ill in the village to soothe and heal. No one knows how long Rosie has lived in the village.

Benny Berman lives alone in the Lighthouse, never curious about anything, until in his old age, he begins wondering about Rosie Cantor and the covered basket he sees her carry over the sand dunes and out of sight every so often.

He imagines the basket is filled with exotic, gorgeous flowers, the like of which he has never seen, for he has never traveled away from Windflower Hale. Benny longs to see, touch, and smell the flowers he imagines Rosie collects on her mysterious trips across the sand dunes.

Then Benny falls ill. Rosie Cantor brings the beautiful flowers Benny has always imagined to him as he lays on his cot high in the lighthouse overlooking Windflower Hale. Benny finally understands the mystery he has wondered about for years.
