Aprašymas

Choosing as her text the complex Usura Canto of Ezra Pound, Professor Brooke-Rose applies and, in the process, evaluates the principles of poetic analysis espoused by Roman Jakobson. Professor Brooke-Rose begins by summarizing the reactions to Jakobson's methods and comments on their validity. She then extends and adapts his method in the light of those criticisms, some of which are seen as justified, notably that his separation of the linguistic levels considered and the order of these levels was too rigorous and that his application of the method has been restricted to conventional forms of poetry such as the sonnet. Adding insights provided by the studies in generative grammar and her own thoughts on a few more general questions such as "deviance" in poetic language, the specificity of the poetic text, and the role of the reader, she continues with a detailed analysis of Pound's Usura Canto according to her modified version of Jakobson's linguistic method.
