A towering Neo-Confucian philosopher of the Song Dynasty, Zhu Xi revolutionized Confucianism by synthesizing the metaphysical concepts of li (principle) and qi (material force) into a coherent theoretical framework. His interpretations of Confucian classics became imperial orthodoxy for over 700 years, shaping education, civil service examinations, and social ethics across East Asia.
