The Parent You Want to Be Is Already Within You
Yoga offers a roadmap for living with less suffering and more ease. While exercise and stress relief may be how many of us first encounter the practice, yoga has much more to offer. Yoga and the Art of Parenting brings the wisdom of yoga into one of the most challenging and meaningful roles we will ever take on: raising children.
Through yoga philosophy, movement, breath, meditation, and self-inquiry, this book explores how greater awareness of ourselves can change the way we parent. When we understand what is happening within us, we have more choice in how we respond to our children. We can begin to look beneath their behavior, understand their inner world, and meet them with greater compassion and connection.
Parenting can bring up more of our own stuff from childhood than we ever expected. We may yell, snap, criticize, or find ourselves caught in power struggles, even when we know those aren't the ways we want to parent. We can become overwhelmed by our children's emotions or feel triggered by seemingly small moments. Often, our reactions have roots in our past experiences, emotional baggage, and the ways we learned to navigate relationships and difficult emotions.
Yoga gives us tools to become curious about these patterns. Through self-study, we can begin to recognize what is happening beneath our reactions and understand how our past experiences and nervous system responses influence the way we show up with our children. With this awareness, we have an opportunity to pause, make a different choice, and respond in ways that are more aligned with the parent we want to be.
This work allows us to access the parent we deeply want to be: the patient parent who can stay present when things get difficult, the compassionate parent who can meet a child in the midst of big emotions, the calm parent who can navigate stressful moments, and the wise parent who can set clear, loving boundaries while maintaining connection.
That parent is already within us. We don't have to become someone entirely different. Beneath the patterns we've learned, the hurts we've carried, and our reactive habits are the qualities we want to bring to our parenting. With awareness and practice, we can uncover them and give them more room to guide us.
Yoga and the Art of Parenting offers practical tools and guidance for doing this inner work. By applying the Eight Limbs of Yoga to the everyday realities of parenting, it invites us to know ourselves more deeply and strengthen our relationships with our children. In doing so, we create more space for patience, compassion, presence, and joy in our families.
