Worm Girl is a grotesque girlhood coming of age poetry collection attempting to untangle itself from the crosshairs of fundamental religious indoctrination, complicated matrilineal upbringing, burgeoning queerness, and the US South. The speaker of these poems speaks frankly--somewhere between the confessional and surreal--about fatness, gender expression, and sexuality as barriers to acceptance from her family, religious, and cultural upbringing. These poems toggle tones of irony and sincerity; they reference literature, cuisine, tumblr, music, and social media; and they attempt to reconcile that meme-ified philosophical question: would you still love me even if I were a worm? That is to say, even if I were of no use to you at all?
