This story about William Nowland places William's life within a period of profound and rapid change, as the colony of NSW moves from a convict settlement

to a self-governing colony. Each thread of evidence is drawn together sequentially in 'the imagining' of what it was like to be William as a first-generation colonial

Australian.

William's life occurred in conjunction with the dispossession of Aboriginal People of Country in all the places he settled. At each stage of his journey first-hand accounts, learned publications and academic articles describe the impact of William and his fellow settlers on each of the First Nations they invaded.
