In his magnum opus (and only philosophical work to date, although it first appeared a long time ago), Mircea Hurmuzachi dismantles the pretensions that inhabit the relatively modern field of animal ethics. Do animals have 'rights'? Do we have a utilitarian obligation to care for them based on a moral need to minimise their suffering?

Hurmuzachi's answer to both those questions is an unqualified yes. Animals are morally significant beings and gratuitous attempts to control or harm them are wrong without qualification.

But their wrongness, Hurmuzachi contends, has little to do with the reasons philosophers usually put forward. Properly considered, animal ethics is one of the building blocks that could lead to a fully just human society. Strangely, the whole area is more about us than it is about them.

Mircea Hurmuzachi was born in Tutova, Romania, in 1947, and comes from a long line of wine producers. After studying undergraduate philosophy in Madrid (where his family had connections), he was summarily recalled to Romania to work as a supervisor at Poșta Română. In 1981, however, an arrest warrant forced him into exile, and he spent the next half-decade in Valencia, where he married the film critic, Federica Calvo. In 1990, he qualified as a Master of Arts (Applied Ethics) in England. With Ceaușescu now safely out of the way, he and his wife returned to Romania, and, together with their two daughters, joined his family's expanding winery. Today, their prize-winning Busuioacă de Bohotin is internationally renowned. Why I Still Eat Animals is Hurmuzachi's first and only philosophical work.
