Aprašymas

Bringing nineteenth-century Virginians and their world to life for the modern reader

Vignettes of Antebellum Virginia is the third volume of Brent Tarter's dazzling series on the history of the Old Dominion. Told in accessible sketches and poignant episodes taking place between 1800 and 1860, this book sheds light on the experiences, thoughts, and feelings of everyday Virginians who lived on the precipice of incredible change—even if they did not know it at the time. Today, the coming of the Civil War looms over the first half of the nineteenth century so much that it profoundly obscures the actual experience of those who lived through it. With these illuminating stories, Tarter reminds us that almost nobody anticipated that war would come, and he shows how that reality did not crystallize for most until the very last moment. The vignettes illustrate, with remarkable immediacy, the nature of relations between people of different cultural, racial, and class backgrounds; they also shed light on slavery, religion, economic change, and how the institutions of government and society functioned in these years. Tarter offers a holistic view of Virginia's history—one that can be enjoyed outside the guild of professional historians.
