Aprašymas

Variations is a retrospective monograph on the work of computational artist Vera Molnár. Through her early use of a pen plotter, Molnár’s self-taught art-making practice served as a foundation to the computational arts movement of the 1960s. Her highly influential practice spanned over fifty years, as she continued to make work well into her late nineties. Influenced by algorithmic musical composition, Molnár’s earliest experiments used chance operations, exploring the possibilities of infinite permutations from drawing to drawing.

Variations is co-published with the UC Irvine Beall Center for Art + Technology and follows an exhibition of Molnár’s work there several years ago. In addition to an essay by David Familian, artistic director of the Beall Center and curator of the exhibition, the publication includes contributions by Dr. Aline Guillermet, writing on the influence of the Stuttgart Scholl on Molnár’s artistic practice; Tiffany Funks, who analyzes Molnár’s notebooks; and Zsofi Valyi-Nagy, who interviewed Molnár for over a year before her passing in 2023.
