Introduction: A Historical Transition of Vasubandhu's Philosophy In the present chapter, I propose to discuss the entire background of Vasubandhu's Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi. In other words, Vasubandhu's philosophical ride which shows his development historically as well as philosophically in his thought process has been elaborated in detail in the subsequent sections as and when required. But before that I am going to discuss first, albeit in brief, the general Buddhist framework, followed by the issues pertaining to the origin, development, and the continuous changes that have taken place in the entire history of Buddhist thought after the Buddha's parinirvā a. The succeeding pages will acquaint us with the issues cited below: 1. An overview of Buddhism. 2. An Introduction to Vasubandhu. 3. Nature and Classification of dharmas. 4. The Early Buddhist Literature. 5. The Doctrine of Causality or dependent Origination (P. pa iccasamuppāda, S. prat tyasamutpāda). 6. Meaning of viññā a. 7. The two aspects of viññā a (S. vijñāna) in the early Buddhist Literature. à viññā a as 'consciousness' / 'underlying sentience' (sa sāric viññā a) à viññā a as cognitive consciousness and its six modes. 8. Causal interrelatedness between the two aspects of viññā a. 9. Meaning of the term Abhidhamma (S. Abhidharma). 10. The Mission plan of Abhidharma.
