1. This is an interdisciplinary work that brings together traditional historical sources with the latest archaeological research, thus providing a much fuller understanding of the process of urbanization in medieval Denmark. 2. Unlike previous studies of early towns in Denmark which focus primarily on either the Iron Age or the Middle Ages, this study bridges both periods, addressing the question of continuity between historical periods, to present a more comprehensive picture of the development of Danish towns. 3. This study incorporates previous research that has hitherto only been available in Danish, thus bringing it to a wider ranging scholarly community.
