Aprašymas

Urban Math for the Trades (by Tjuan Smith) follows Gene Malik, a Chicago Southside teen who thinks he's bad at math - until construction site conversations with a Project Manager named Ms. Alvarez, his older cousin Ron, Foreman Big Jime start showing him that the math he "hates" in school (long division, fractions, order of operations, integers, place value, percentages) is the exact same math that runs job sites: pouring concrete, splitting materials evenly, reading blueprints, sizing solar panels, estimating costs.

Each chapter pairs a real moment in Gene Malik's life - home, school, a construction site, a job interview - with a math concept explained through trades work (bricklaying, electrical, HVAC, etc.), building from basic arithmetic up through more advanced problem-solving as he moves toward figuring out his own future ("Leveling Up," the final chapter, deals with career and next-step decisions). It's aimed at kids/teens and young adults who need math to feel concrete and relevant rather than abstract, using an authentic urban voice and mentor-figure dialogue as the teaching device rather than traditional textbook exposition.
