Train Whistles and Other Distant Memories contains memories of growing up in a small town in North Central West Virginia in the 1950's and 1960's. It was a time when people were not in such a hurry, when families and friends came together more often to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, and when fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other men in the community took boys under their wings and taught them by example skills, principles, and small-town values that would prepare them for adult life. Much of the book relates to fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities that are closely tied to the culture and traditions of West Virginia and that have, over the years, created strong multi-generational bonds, priceless memories, and a lifetime of enjoyment and satisfaction.
