Ugochukwu has just won the Humboldt scholarship; a rare chance to teach and research in Germany, and to give his family the better life he's always dreamed of. In 1993/94 Mainz, almost fifty years after the Second World War, the country was still healing with silences heavy with memory. When his pregnant wife, Ifeoma, arrives with their young son, the joy of reunion slowly gives way to unease.

Germany is colder than they expected; not just the weather, but the looks, the distance, the feeling of never quite belonging. While Ugochukwu is caught up in his work, Ifeoma battles loneliness, isolation, and the quiet weight of a city that doesn't see her.

As the months pass, the tension between them builds, chapter after chapter, until one evening by the River Rhine when Ifeoma gets into a fight with a woman, and everything comes undone. She knew that something must finally give.
