Born in 1935 in what is now Belarus, Tomasz Żołnierkiewicz has developed a distinctive body of work of rare visual intensity, in which the power of colour meets a profound lyricism. Long overlooked in Western Europe, his work is now regarded as one of the most original examples of Eastern European abstraction from the second half of the 20th century. Blending geometric abstraction, tachism, and Lettrist influences, his compositions evoke both fragility and renewal. It also carries a tragic dimension, as much of his early production was destroyed in a flood that struck his Warsaw studio in the late 1980s. Imbued with rhythm, tension and chromatic resonance, his vibrant canvases reveal his constant quest for harmony.

Inspired by the classical music of Bach and Chopin, Tomasz Żołnierkiewicz constructs a visual language and paints in the manner of a musical composition, where pulsations and movements undulate before the viewer's eyes.
