It was the largest silver find ever found in California. Calico boomed until the mines began to go dry in 1896. By 1904 it was a ghost town. Walter Knott purchased Calico in the 1950s, and architecturally restored all but five remaining original buildings to look exactly as they did in the 1880s. Today it is a County Park. Written by Penelope Dyan, award winning author, attorney and former teacher, with photographs by John D. Weigand, this learn to read book is perfect to carry along on your road trip, or it can be used simply to practice reading skills.
