Aprašymas

The Turks: From the Unenlightened to the Enlightened is an eyewitness travelogue and historical-religious study of modern Turkey, viewed through the legacy of the Ottoman period and the experiences of Muslim scholars, religious institutions, educators, and communities navigating profound social change.

Mufti Abū Lubābah Shāh Mansūr combines personal observation with historical reflection, interviews, institutional encounters, and accounts of Turkish religious life. Rather than presenting a conventional tourist narrative, the author deliberately concentrates on questions of religious education, Islamic identity, scholarly transmission, Ottoman memory, spiritual formation, and the changing place of Islam within Turkish society.

The work examines the historical consequences of the abolition of the Ottoman Khilāfah, restrictions placed upon traditional Islamic learning, the role of Imām and Khatīb schools, the revival of madrasah education, and the contribution of scholars and spiritual teachers associated with the Naqshbandī tradition. Particular attention is given to Shaykh Maḥmūd Efendi and the networks of education, worship, spiritual instruction, and social welfare connected with his circle.

The author also discusses political and cultural developments in Turkey as they appeared during the period in which the book was written. These discussions reflect the author's own contemporary observations and interpretations and form part of the volume's historical record.

Other sections consider Ottoman historical consciousness, Turkish educational institutions, media and culture, social welfare, relations between Turkish and South Asian Muslims, and the enduring memory of the Khilāfat Movement among scholars of the Indian subcontinent.

This volume is especially relevant to readers interested in modern Turkish Islamic history, Ottoman memory, Islamic education, Muslim scholarly networks, Tasawwuf, religious identity, and eyewitness accounts of social transformation.

Suitable for scholars, students of Islamic and Middle Eastern history, seminaries, research libraries, and readers seeking a source-based Muslim perspective on the religious history of modern Turkey.
