Dreamwalkers--children of Dream--embark on a journey to stop the Queen of the Dead, Ányátrá of Denedrad, and her army from capturing the universe's cosmic arbiter of divine oaths: the Tree of Sacred Bounds. At the same time, Divines--offspring of the Void said to be destined to replace mortal gods--are mysteriously disappearing, with rumours that they are being hunted and massacred by an unknown entity.

One day in an Ottawa high school, best friends Fiona and Katy are taken out of class by an odd crew of teenagers claiming to be part of a circus. After this "kidnapping" goes awry when the group is attacked by the folkloric monster La Cegua, the pair's kidnappers-turned-guardians recruit them on their quest through a string of magic portals to Dystopia, the homeworld of the Tree, promising answers about Fiona's family and her enigmatic past.

As the group's paths intertwine, they must uncover and confront their personal histories and buried traumas: Katy's childhood as an orphan and the loss of her friend Muri, Haethan's possession by a violent entity residing within him, Kyle's lost memories and identity, Tebora's romantic past with Marucus and the incident that split them apart, Atheda's exploitation by her adoptive parents as a pawn in criminal activities, and Narumie's kidnapping as a child for a "pilot project" which seems strangely related to the disappearance of Divines, as well as a pact she makes with a newfound eldritch patron. But the closer they get to the truth, the less certain they become about who actually sent them--or why.
