The novel is a satirical farce about growing up in small town America during the last half of the twentieth century. The plot follows the adventures of Donjon and his two friends who meet in the summer before Donjon enters elementary school. After a rock fight, long-winded argument, and a brief scuffle, they explore westward into Dedman's Woods, where some years later they will have their first experience hunting big game. Our three heroes move from one ridiculous, occasionally dangerous, adventure to another until one day they steal weapons and begin making plans for an all-out attack on the high school. In the background, always, are the historical and present absurdity of Echo Creek itself (or the real causes for the eventual shootings?): Honey Bee Jones--revolutionary, adventurer, and lover; Papa Lizardus--media mogul and one of our hero's antagonists; Marcus T.--revolutionary publisher; Frieda Frog--just another girl who finds happiness in an alternative lifestyle; Crock--local boy made good as terrorism enthusiast; and many more.
