This novel is based on fact. What was the real relationship between Captain James Waddell and Lillias Nichols, a prisoner from the destroyed bark Delphine? Why were Waddell's memoirs altered when first published in 1960? In 1865 during the turmoil and anguish of the American Civil War, The CSS Shenandoah docked in the neutral port of Melbourne, Australia for repairs. On board were eleven prisoners taken from enemy ships, one of whom was the beautiful and imperious wife of a Northern Union captain. This tale of passion amidst adventure at sea and conspiracy ashore is based on an intriguing incident through which Australia became embroiled in the American Civil War.
