Aprašymas

The Right Man confirms, challenges, and analyzes the image of the

South as a monolithic environment. Shepard often referred to the 1900

National Negro Business League conference in Boston as a source of a

good deal of negativity about blacks. This convention attracted every

major leadership, business, religious, and cultural organization in Amer-

ica. Instead of this collective mass of leaders pushing forward, however,

they were stymied and compromised by a white reporter who focused

on Booker T. Washington's untimely joke about a farm animal instead

of his economic self-help philosophy. Nevertheless, the delegates left the

convention pumped up and determined to push forward to create a new

society and a new people. Shepard, Young, and Henry P. Cheatham left

determined to make Washington's philosophy of economic self-help a

shield against increased segregation and disfranchisement.
