With her satchel in one hand and her ticket in the other, Flossie Mae boarded the bus. It seemed she had been waiting a lifetime to leave Coley's Corner. Her head was full of big dreams and high expectations. There was no more looking back; the hot sun, corn fields and digging 'taters were finally behind her. She had plans to make her mark in the City.
As the bus's tires slowly rolled along the gravel drive and onto the highway, Flossie Mae couldn't help but look back. The pain of seeing her father, Mr. Frederick Douglass DuPont and her sister, Betty still standing there, still waving goodbye was almost unbearable. And the sight of her mother, Mrs. Bertha Mae--sitting in her rocking chair this morning--broke her heart. If this was really what she wanted; Flossie Mae wondered why her heart was so heavy.
Singing job or not; Flossie Mae intended to make Augustus Atwater pay for making her wait--pay for all of his empty promises, his many excuses and for his mouth always being full of sweet talk. She hoped the City would be all that he had claimed.
But she would see--
Yes, she would see.
Instead, I've been lost in the jungle--with the wolves on my trail!"
