This book focuses on postcolonial cultural heritage preservation and the restitution of colonial artefacts to their countries of origin in Africa, as set out in the Pan-African Charter for the Cultural Renaissance of Africa. It analyses the history of the charter, which came into force in 2020, and its multifaceted content. In doing so, it acknowledges the roles of the African Union and its member states, as well as UNESCO, in implementing the charter, particularly within the framework of 'Global Priority Africa'. Against the backdrop of numerous cultural assets and human remains from colonial contexts of injustice still being held in Western European museums today, the author examines the international legal framework for restitution and the obstacles and progress made in this area, both past and present, from an ethical perspective. The author argues that international support for postcolonial reconciliation and restitution is growing, and that decolonial transformation processes are occurring in both the Global North and the African museum world.
