In 1911, British explorer Robert Falcon Scott set out across Antarctica hoping to become the first person to reach the South Pole. After months of hauling sledges through one of the most hostile environments on Earth, Scott and four companions arrived--only to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there.
