Elkins set out to write a short story about something scary that could quite plausibly happen to him. Instead of being terrified or depressed, he found the exercise therapeutic. So he wrote more and more stories about growing old and discovered he'd written The Old Guy Goes.

At the end, the old guy goes with satisfaction. And the reader will feel the same in turning the last page.
