The Old and New Monongahela is a well-written, comprehensive, impeccably researched body of work, providing, in many instances, documentation of family lines not often available to the researcher. Dr. Van Voorhis draws upon an abundance of reference material in developing the individual and family narratives, and drafts his information and conclusions in clear and succinct biographies of many of the early settlers and contemporary 1893 residents. Information provided includes births, deaths, marriages, occupations, and often the family line down several generations. Source material, both private and public, includes information from interviews provided by his patients, acquaintances, local families and family members, articles and stories from newspapers, obituaries, church records, government records, and numerous other sources. To assist the researcher in locating individuals, a new 28-page index has been added.
