October 1950. The replacements come off the trucks carrying nothing, because it was not summer and nobody issued it to them on the ship. Then the Chinese cross the border, and at Kunu-ri the 3d Battalion is destroyed on the road south.

Thurgood Marshall flies out in January and reads the court-martial records himself, and publishes what he finds: hearings measured in minutes, and sentences matching nothing handed down in any other regiment. Sentences are reviewed and cut. He publishes it in New York under a title nobody could misread.

The army rebuilds under Ridgway and goes back over to the attack, and the regiment fights to the Han and the Hant'an, and on the second of June, at Chipo-ri, a sergeant of twenty-one named Cornelius Charlton takes Hill 543 and does not come down from it.

None of it counts. On the first of October 1951 the regiment forms for the last time in a field with the war muttering north of it, the first sergeant counts it as he has counted every formation of his service, and the unit records go into crates. Everything anyone would need was already in them.

They were told for a century that the record would not support them. The record supported them. Nobody had gone and looked.
