It is 1277, the fifth year of the reign of Edward I. A priest lies dead, murdered on the steps of his altar. Children go missing on the streets of medieval St Albans. Lady Jeanne de Lascy, a young noble, is abducted from the Lazar House on Watling Street. Royal Nuncio and Man-of-Law, Simon Lowys, is sent to the town by Queen Eleanor to find the maid and solve the mystery of the priest's murder.

Meanwhile, the King's Intelligencer, 'le Reynard, ' is hunting the assassin whose attempt on the life of the Queen a year before brought about the destruction of the Daughters of the Shadows. Their investigations converge, focusing on the new Papal Legate in England. But things do not go smoothly, placing both in danger and one of them on trial for their life.
