1905. Sir Walter Scott was a master of diverse talents. He was a man of letters, a dedicated historian and historiographer, a well-read translator of foreign texts, and a talented poet. Deriving most of his material from his native Scotland, its history and its legends, Scott invented and mastered what we know today as the historical novel. The Fair Maid of Perth is the Second Series of the Chronicles of the Canongate. The novel is set in the late fourteenth century during the reign of Robert III of Scotland. The King's son, the Duke of Rothsay, attempts to abduct Catherine Glover, the 'Fair Maid of Perth', daughter of an honest burgher. He is thwarted by the intervention of Henry Smith or Gow, an armourer and renowned swordsman, who hacks off the hand of Sir John Ramorny, the Duke's Master of Horse.
