Aprašymas

This book traces the evolution of the South African Special Forces from the end of the Border War in 1989 to 2024.

Drawing on interviews with former and serving operators, archival material, doctrine and training manuals, operational reports, and published sources, it examines three linked themes: how the force was organised, trained, and deployed. The study follows the organisation from its withdrawal from Namibia, through recovery and reform in the 1990s and early 2000s, to later problems of shrinking budgets, leadership change, declining standards, and uncertainty about its future. It discusses operations in South Africa and across the continent of Africa, including peace missions in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, evacuation operations in Côte d'Ivoire and Libya, the Battle of Bangui in the Central African Republic, and security support during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Beyond military history, the book offers a broader account of how a secretive institution survives political transition. The book's main contribution lies in documenting a little-studied period and explaining why the force remained active, changed shape, and now faces pressing questions about its role, training, and capability.

This book will be of much interest to students of special operations, strategic studies, African history, and International Relations.
