In July 1878, the legendary Sam Bass Gang planned a bank robbery in the small town of Round Rock, Texas. The gang had been involved in a series of train and stagecoach robberies over the course of only a few months, but had consistently eluded capture. The public was enraged.

Among the four outlaws taking part in this latest heist, one had secretly struck a deal with the Texas Rangers to betray the other three. In a shootout which took place one day prior to the intended robbery, one outlaw was killed and the group leader, Sam Bass, mortally wounded.
