When his beloved fiancée disappears on the day that they are supposed to announce their engagement, His Grace, Lord Hugh Byron is in deep despair. He loves the lowly maiden and is prepared to live a life of loneliness for he cannot bear to marry any other woman. His heart belongs to Jane Watson and he has no interest in any other. Lord Byron believes that Jane will eventually return to him and then they will be happy together. On Christmas Day when he receives a strange request from one of the wealthiest men in England, Lord Byron knows it's a proposal to marry the Earl's daughter. Out of respect for the older man, he accepts to host the earl and his countess but his mind is firmly made up about waiting for his one true love.
