In the turbulent Cape Fear region of 1775 North Carolina, a Highland Scottish immigrant must choose between loyalty to the British Crown that protected his exodus from Scotland and the new American ideals that threaten his community's survival. As the American Revolution tears the colony apart, Allen McGill is caught in the middle of a conflict that divides neighbors, clans, and families. As a deacon, Allen's priority is the survival and care of his congregation. Surrounded by fellow Scots who hold fast to their oaths to King George, many still broken by the Battle of Culloden, Allen is pressured to join the Loyalist ranks in the "Valley of the Scots". Yet, the whisper of freedom and the threat of Patriot rage from the coast make him wonder if his future lies with the Crown or this new, chaotic country.
