What does the cross stand for in the 21st century? After over 2000 years since the crucifixion of Jesus is anyone really still bothered? The Romans crucified thousands of people, what makes the crucifixion of Jesus special, why is it different? Why do we still remember the crucifixion of Jesus and yet have hardly any interest in the crucifixion of anyone else? If it is the meaning of the crucifixion of Jesus that is so important, what is this meaning and why should anyone be bothered about it?…

Aprašymas

What does the cross stand for in the 21st century? After over 2000 years since the crucifixion of Jesus is anyone really still bothered? The Romans crucified thousands of people, what makes the crucifixion of Jesus special, why is it different? Why do we still remember the crucifixion of Jesus and yet have hardly any interest in the crucifixion of anyone else? If it is the meaning of the crucifixion of Jesus that is so important, what is this meaning and why should anyone be bothered about it? Equally important was what actually occurred on the cross of Jesus, as well as his suffering and death. For those who wrote the New Testament the actual act of nailing to the cross and the torture of it was not important, and they simply say, 'They crucified him'. Is this because in the first century everyone knew what crucifixion entailed and had witnessed it on various occasions, or perhaps because it was so horrific to describe, the word crucified was enough? This book sets out to explore the events that led up to and surrounded the crucifixion of Jesus in some detail, comparing gospel accounts. This is followed by an examination of what the crucifixion of Jesus achieved and what its meaning is today.
