Aprašymas
The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia, Volume 2 of 2, completes the selected 1907 composite source in a Standard large-print hardcover. It begins at the original Book III boundary and continues through Books IV and V, the Sixth Book attributed to Richard Beling, the later eclogues, and the complete source endnotes and transcriber's notes. Volume 1 carries the 1907 title matter, Ernest A. Baker's Introduction and Life of Sidney, testimonies, Sidney's dedication, Books I and II, and the first two eclogues.
The continuation of the romance moves through changing loyalties, contests over power, and the consequences of judgment in Arcadia's courts and pastoral settings. Its poems and songs are part of the reading text, not illustrations or detachable extras. This volume retains 1,757 source-classified verse lines in their original sequence and indentation hierarchy. The printed Contents distinguishes the later books, eclogues, and apparatus so that a reader can find an episode and return to it.
Contributor history is visible in this volume. The selected 1907 source credits Sir William Alexander for an addition within Book III and Richard Beling for its Sixth Book, while Sidney remains the central author and Baker the editor of the source edition. Sidney's Arcadia appeared posthumously in 1590 and in an enlarged five-book form in 1593. This physical reprint follows the identified 1907 witness and does not claim that all its parts were written or first published at the same time.
This Standard Large Print Edition is a 7-by-10-inch case-laminate hardcover. The body is set in 18-point Atkinson Hyperlegible Next with 27-point line spacing. Ragged-right setting avoids stretched gaps between words, and the text is not divided at line endings. Generous margins leave room for a bound page to be held and read. These are specific print design choices, not a claim of WCAG conformance for a fixed-layout hardcover. The selected historical HTML witness contains no interior illustrations.
After the narrative and verse, the original ENDNOTES remain together in source order. They include groups for Baker's Introduction and for Books I and II, whose reading text appears in Volume 1, as well as notes to later books. The distinct TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES section follows. Historical page references in that apparatus belong to the source edition; they have not been silently converted into claims about the pagination of this large-print setting. The companion source note describes the split and all contributors.
This volume's original Lagniappe turns to a separately catalogued 1674 Arcadia in the Folger Shakespeare Library. Its record identifies Bellings's Sixth Book as having a separate dated title page and notes its first separate issue in 1624. That physical witness helps explain how one bound book can contain material with several publication histories. It is a historical comparator, not the copytext of this edition, and no passage from it replaces the selected 1907 reading text.
ISBN 9798259516120 identifies Volume 2 alone; companion ISBN 9798259516076 supplies the opening through Book II. Together they retain all 1,462 prepared blocks and 4,225 source-classified verse lines of the selected 1907 witness.
The exterior uses a public-domain 1743 engraving of Sir Philip Sidney by Jacob Houbraken from the Rijksmuseum, after a painting by Isaac Oliver. This historical cover art is separate from the Project Gutenberg reading witness, which has no illustrations. The source note identifies the 1907 copytext, its contributors, and historical page references.
