This text is significant because we can learn a great deal about what it means to be called by God and what it means to serve in the role as a leader over God's people. There is no way to really understand God's mind when he chooses who he chooses to work for him. For example, in this text, we see that he chooses the least of the men in the family. First, he chose a little nation called Israel and then he chose the little tribe of Judah. Then he chose little Jesse and the shepherd's family, and last of all, he chose the last born of all the boys. God has track record of calling on people that no one else would call.
