This is a critical edition of the charters and other documents of the Hommet family, who were constables of Normandy and leading barons under the Angevin kings of England and Capetian kings of France. It is the first major edition of the acts of a Norman baronial dynasty, with numerous records concerning 13 counties in eastern and southern England as well. It contains 450 deeds issued by 35 men and 19 women from the Hommet dynasty and their predecessors from the families of Say, Remilly, and Aunay, and appendices with 48 related documents. The collection reveals the roots of aristocratic power in the Anglo-Norman realm and early Capetian Normandy, including economic assets, judicial rights, fiscal exactions, and ties of loyalty.
