The family surname of Buist has a long lineage going back through the mists of the ages in Scotland. The surname is derived from the old Scottish word buist or boist, which means wood or someone that lived by a wood. The earliest known record of the Buist family appears in the year of 1564 when James Buist the Elder married Janet Huton at Dunfermline Abbey in Dunfermline Parish in the Kingdom of Fife. This union produced six children all of whom were born and raised in Dunfermline Parish. Thusly the modern day family members are descended from James Buist the Elder.
