A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of BA (Hons) Journalism and French Combined Honours Programme at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston in May 1999 This dissertation concerns the events surrounding the birth and development of public radio broadcasting in Britain and Europe and will examine and contrast in particular the early history of the BBC - the world`s best known public service - and Radio Luxembourg, which grew to become the world`s largest and most innovative commercial radio station.
