Before joining the U.S. Navy he studied art in Frankfurt, Germany and later at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1976, as a young Lieutenant Junior-Grade, he was commissioned to do a series of sketches of the USS Constitution in preparation for the coming national bicentennial. That work, buried in obscurity for over 30 years, is brought to light once again and made available to a much wider audience. Roach later became one of the best known combat artists of all time. He actively served in Vietnam, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and the Bosnia-Herzegovina conflict-serving 10 years on active duty and another 13 years as a reservist.
