Even though level-headed archeologist, Dr. Gabrielle Graham has recently gotten over a difficult break up, she finds herself attracted to Quinn Kilbride, a rare book dealer from Edinburgh, who claims to detect spirits. It doesn't take her long to realize that Quinn is no ordinary man, and neither is the attraction that the two of them share. Sparked by the intrigue of adventure, Gabrielle joins forces with Quinn and his twin sister, Fiona to confront a four-hundred-year-old curse-one that kills, then snares the spirit of any who touch it. They have to banish the curse and free the thirteen spirits it holds before the California Parks Department starts developing the cave as a tourist attraction. While searching for answers, Quinn is given a clue that nearly kills him and the trio quickly learn that it's going to take more than a shovel and a notebook to solve this particular mystery. The three of them rush across northern California where they find a cavern that holds the answers they need. In the end, the spirits aren't the only things they are able to set free.
