The 120 Days of Sodom by Marquis de Sade is one of the most infamous and controversial works of literature ever written. Conceived while de Sade was imprisoned in the Bastille in 1785, the book is an unrelenting exploration of depravity, power, and absolute corruption.

Set in an isolated castle, four wealthy libertines-an aristocrat, a judge, a banker, and a bishop-gather with a group of kidnapped victims to indulge in a meticulously structured orgy of cruelty, debauchery, and sadism. Over four months, they subject their captives to unspeakable horrors, guided by the increasingly depraved tales of veteran prostitutes who recount escalating levels of perversion.

Never completed by de Sade, The 120 Days of Sodom was discovered in manuscript form and later published posthumously. Often regarded as a philosophical treatise on the nature of power and moral decay rather than mere pornography, the book has been both condemned as obscene and studied as an uncompromising examination of human nature's darkest impulses. It remains one of the most disturbing yet thought-provoking texts in world literature.
