At a point in our future when people use financial credits instead of cash and when journalists double police officers, rancher Fred Furlingame has a radical idea - to breed cattle on an abandoned biosphere on Mars. Fred's plan touches off a classic battle between America's two major political parties, the Traditionalists and the Progressives, and that battle becomes the turning point of the next Presidential election. Political battles notwithstanding, there are important lessons for Fred to learn as he overcomes resistance from his wife, an estranged relationship with his son and a myriad of technical challenges with first getting cattle to Mars and then, once there, successfully breeding them. Ultimately, there is another party with stake in the game, a group that no one but a handful of people anticipated. And it's this party who will have the last word.
