Originally published in 1952, this book studies the condition of the hundred million people who lived in countries occupied by Soviet troops for many years during the Cold War. Such a study is not only interesting in itself, but it throws light on the Russian reality of that time, something that has enduring relevance in a time of Russian resurgence in the 21st century. The book examines Stalin's regime through the prism of conditions in the satellite countries of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Rumania, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia and uses mainly official sources such as the Governmental and Communist Party publications of the Eastern European countries.
