Spartanburg County is surrounded by the present day counties of Cherokee, Greenville, Laurens, and Union Counties, S.C. and to the North by Cleveland, Polk and Rutherford Counties, N.C. Spartanburg County was a very important migration path within S.C due to the wagon road heading north out of Columbia heading directely into Spartanburg County.
