As the first title in a new series from Triglyph Books, Clive Aslet has written a short biography of Sir Edwin Lutyens, among the greatest of British architects. Lutyens's idyllic country houses defined the domestic self-image of the Edwardian Age. The palace he created for the Viceroy of India at New Delhi has a footprint bigger than Versailles. Built after the cataclysm of the First World War, his war memorials remain a hallowed part of national life. The Elemental Classicism of his late works revived the 5,000-year old Classical tradition. In geometry he saw the divine. Professor Aslet distils a lifetime of studying Lutyens and shares new archival research. Written with wit and verve, the book captures Lutyens's personality, introduces readers to his Theosophist wife Lady Emily and explores the scores of gardens he designed with Gertrude Jekyll, not to mention the cathedral in Liverpool that would have rivalled St Peter's in Rome.
