A stone is found on Mars with mysterious markings. Systems begin failing on the ship bringing it to Earth. Random violence escalates after the Marstone arrives on Earth. Then Maxwell Vaughn, a member of a group of the foremost physicists on the planet, vanishes from a building with heavy surveillance and tight security. Jim Pleasant Wolfshadow, a Cheyenne, former Navy Seal, and retired operative for Nattech, Inc., comes out of retirement to find his friend Max. During his meeting with The Seven, Wolfshadow also disappears. Famine, assassinations, social unrest, and natural disasters are unleashed on the planet while Sarah "Little Bird" Boone searches for Wolfshadow.

Meanwhile Wolfshadow finds himself in Earth's future in the company of a shapeshifter who leads him on a quest, not only find Max and return him to Earth, but to stop a godlike entity known as Mahu. Mahu exists in another dimension and feeds on the creation of chaos. He has sent a monster called Briareus to destroy humanity, but his actions could destroy both time and space throughout the universe. Wolfshadow battles the powerful Mahu on his home world. When all hope seems to be lost a surprising ally arises: the Shadow of the Storm.
