The author is one of the classics of American detective fiction. Samuel Dashiell Hammett (also Dashiell Hammet, Hammett; English: Samuel Dashiell Hammett, May 27, 1894 – January 10, 1961) was an American writer and critic, author of detective novels, novellas, and short stories that have become classics. Along with Raymond Chandler and James M. Cain, he was one of the founders of the hard-boiled detective genre. Hammett is also sometimes regarded as one of the founders of the noir subgenre.
